The Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program has been a well-respected and comprehensive residency program since its inception in 1926. The program is four years in duration and accepts three residents per year granting a certificate in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.
Located in Oakland, California, Highland Hospital is the primary training facility for the residency program. Highland Hospital is a 236-bed hospital and the only level one trauma center in the East Bay. The residents receive broad surgical exposure in the areas of dentoalveolar, dental implants, trauma, pathology, reconstruction, orthognathic, and TMJ surgery. While Highland Hospital serves as the primary home for the residency training program, residents rotate at various facilities across the Bay Area.
Highland Hospital has a longstanding commitment of excellence in teaching and training residents in OMFS, General Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedic Surgery. The OMFS program is under the educational guidance of the Highland Hospital Graduate Medical Education (GME) office.
Since 2021, Highland Hospital has held an educational affiliation with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry. Through this affiliation, UCSF provides the core educational training for the residents at Highland Hospital through four full-time faculty. In addition to the core Highland Hospital faculty, residents' educational training is augmented by three full-time faculty at Kaiser Permanente Hospital.
